Choosing a theme for your newborn session
Whilst the main aim of any newborn session is to create a gallery of beautiful images of your baby for you to treasure forever, you can also incorporate one or more themes to make your images even more memorable. I love creating unique works of art for parents and so I continuously seek out new ideas for themes that are timeless and showcase the unique beauty of a newborn baby.
In this blog, I’ll share my ideas and hopefully help you decide what theme(s) you’d like for your newborn photoshoot. Whether you’re booking with me or another photographer, I hope you find my insights helpful as you plan your newborn photo session.
Seasonal
This is the most popular theme for babies born in autumn and winter. As you can see from my images below, the colours of autumn provide an amazing backdrop to the delicate features of a baby’s face.

A favourite for many parents of babies born in November and December is of course a Christmas theme, which can range from subtle tones and textures to give images a Christmas feel to incorporating props that tell a Christmas story. As you can see from the images below, it’s a great way to combine a seasonal theme with a celebration of a baby’s tiny newborn features and serenity as they sleep.

Birth month
Similar to the seasonal theme, there is also an opportunity to incorporate the colour of your baby’s birthstone in your images. For baby girls born in May, pink and green is a wonderful combination that not only looks incredible in images, it is a lovely memory of that time in May when your little girl arrived and you met her for the first time.

Favourite colours
Never be afraid to ask a photographer for your favourite colour. Colours mean so much to us. They can evoke childhood memories and special family occasions or simply make us feel warm, calm and serene. Whilst you’ll see numerous images of newborns in various colour schemes online, don’t be afraid to ask for something different. Fashions come and go, so what everyone wants today will change tomorrow. What’s important to you is less likely to change. So if you have a colour that you love, that you wear all the time, that reminds you of someone special, please request it. I ask all of my clients to share their favourite colours with me so I can plan a session with colours that they’ll love. As you can see from the images below, anything is possible with the right colour combination and focused editing.
Events and people
Sometimes clients will ask if I can incorporate an object or create a theme that reminds them of something or someone special. I’m often asked to incorporate flowers for a number of reasons including love of gardens and flowers, family link to floristry, or link to a flower that has special significance.
It’s important that you get images from your newborn photoshoot that you love, that are memorable and have real meaning to you and your family, so please don’t be afraid to highlight any theme requests to your newborn photographer.
