How to plan your newborn session

Planning your newborn photoshoot

There are so many newborn photography options available it can be difficult to decide what type of session and style will suit you best. To make sure you get the images you want, it’s important to plan your session. Taking the steps I’ve outlined in this article will help you book your session with confidence.

Find your style

Newborn photography has become incredibly popular over the past 10 years. From completely natural, documentary style photos to styled and posed studio images, there’s a variety of styles you can choose from.

Colour Vs Black & White

Decide whether you prefer colour or black and white images. Whilst colour images can be changed to black and white with the click of a button on your phone, they are completely different professional disciplines. You’ll have seen from my website that I’m definitely a colour photographer and that’s what I offer my clients. If you’re looking for black and white photography then it’s important to research photographers who offer that as part of their standard style and session packages.

Neutral Vs Colour

Some newborn photographers specialise in white and neutral tones like beige and grey, whilst others specialise in offering colour palettes that can be customised to complement your baby and your home.

You’ll see from my gallery that I offer my clients bespoke colour palettes and I discuss this with my clients before their newborn session so I can plan specific sets and colour combinations that match their style and preferences.

Check the essentials

When you research newborn photographers, it’s important to check out their experience in newborn photography so you can be confident that your baby will be safe at all times during your newborn photoshoot. This is particularly important for styled and posed images as the photographer will be handling your baby.

For studio based newborn sessions, check the travel time from your home to the studio and research the availability of nearby parking. The logistics of taking a newborn out and about can be tricky at the best of times and can be even more challenging, especially if you’re recovering from a C section. An alternative to a studio session is to have a mobile newborn session. I offer my clients in home newborn photoshoots where I recreate a studio setting in their home. This removes the need for travel, allows parents to relax more with all their home comforts around them and makes it easier to settle the baby.

Book in advance

With the unpredictability of when baby will arrive, some parents prefer to arrange a newborn session once their little one has been born. However, many newborn photographers get booked up months in advance, so to avoid disappointment it’s best to get booked in with your chosen photographer at the 20-30 week stage of pregnancy. Most photographers will book in a tentative date based on your baby’s due date and then confirm a date with you once your baby arrives so you shouldn’t need to worry about moving your photoshoot date.

Following these steps will ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable newborn photoshoot experience and I hope this has helped.
